Stem Cell Therapy
What is Knee Arthritis
Knee is one of the most important joints of body for moving and walking.
It is very important and vital that we keep this joint healthy in order to have normal and painless movements. To keep our knee healthy, we need to get to know its structure.
The whole surface of knee is covered by a hyaline cartilage which is lead to painless movement and less fraction with surfaces of the bones which have made up the knee. This cartilage is the main part of knee.
From birth time till puberty, this cartilage develops and gets a thickness proper for human’s body. One of the unique specifications of this cartilage is not having blood stream and lack of possibility for regeneration. After some time, due to factors like age, physical and chemical stresses, trauma and…, cracks are created in the cartilage which makes it thinner and its function will be deteriorated. Finally, once the thickness of cartilage is half of what it was, its normal function is lost and we feel pain in knee. This problem is called “knee Arthritis”.
What is Stem Cell Therapy
On time and proper treatment of this problem can be lead to better functioning of knee, pain prevention and avoiding major operations such as total knee arthroplasty which is unfortunately the only solution at the end stage of knee osteoartheritis.
In the other hand, one of the newest treatments of this problem, especially in preliminary and medium stages, is the use of patient’s stem cells. By the use of mesenchymal stem cells, developed cracks are healed and the thickness of the cartilage is increased. In this method, stem cells of patient are separated from tissues like marrows or fat and once they are proliferated, stem cells are placed in the damaged area by arthroscopic surgery .
Nowadays this method due to its efficacy and not having side effects has become popular globally as an effective treatment for knee Arthritis and other damages of knee cartilage. Moreover, it has found its special position in new approaches of treatments in sports medicine due to rapid healing.
